Thomas Roy Markusen

As a premier, fine-craft artist in the U.S., Thomas Roy Markusen is dedicated to the excellence of American metalsmithing. During the past four decades, he has established himself using copper, brass, bronze, silver and aluminum in diversified forms and concepts. He creates the numerous colors and rich patinas in his work by applying acid-based solutions on the copper, as well as using heat in varying duration. His large wall collages, furniture, and architectural work continue to give collectors the opportunity to select dramatic, vibrant, and metallic focus points for their home or office.

The unique work of Markusen has a timeless appeal. The course, fiery grandeur of his hammered copper evokes images of historical metalwork, yet utilizes distinctly American contemporary forms. The ability to treat red hot metal as a fluid medium to be shaped and formed continued to fascinate and challenge him.

Fine craft as a valuable art form and as an aesthetic and cultural expression has been especially pertinent in the U.S. where Markusen and other enterprising artisans have revolutionized the Contemporary American Craft/Art Movement. Markusen’s metal work is in the White House Collection of American Crafts, Vatican Museum (Rome), Museum of Contemporary Crafts (NYC), Racine Art Museum (WI), the University of Rochester Memorial Art Gallery (NY), many galleries across the U.S. and thousands of private and corporate collections.
